The photograph

Gérard-Philippe by Sarah Moon_TIFF.tif

An extract from the preface by
Sir Christopher Hampton, film director, theater director and screenwriter

"In my case, I was led, a glass of good wine in my hand, on a beautiful late afternoon in spring, to a comfortable chair, placed seemingly at random in a sheltered corner of a Swiss meadow, where I sat for what seemed like a remarkably short time, while Gérard-Philippe composed and shot the portrait he had in his mind. (...) His eye is astonishingly quick, his decision-making instantaneous and authoritative, his framing superb, his manner unobtrusive and as convivial as the bottle of wine which is his sole piece of technical equipment – and his sensitivity to the moods and anxieties of his subjects is as acute as that of the most intrepid of lion-tamers."

"So one day, Gérard-Philippe knocks on our door, wearing his passion for cinema and photography on his sleeve, with a sincere desire to help his fellow man, wide-eyed and full of the energy that carries him to distant countries from his native Switzerland. To encourage people to love, you yourself must act as an example: as we all know, Gérard-Philippe does this and so much more. He loves nothing more than an impossible challenge or a project that brings us closer together. He excels at forging new connections, as well as at understanding human emotion and the poetry of existence. With him is his guiding spirit, the idea of liberty expressed by Cyrano de Bergerac: “And I walk alone, with nothing about me that shines, but decked out with independence and with honesty”. The sentiment is matched only by John Ford’s philosophy: “Be local, and you’ll be universal”.
